Reasons for Circumcision

Medical

Phimosis is a condition in which the patient is unable to retract the foreskin fully, which is very common and can happen for a variety of reasons. This can lead to frequent infections, bad smells, unpleasant discharges, and balanitis.

Circumcision is an effective immediate solution to these conditions. As a preventative measure, this procedure reduces the risk of penile cancer, HPV, and future infections and UTIs & cervical cancer for their partner.

Cosmetic

More than half of patients come to our clinic for aesthetic reasons. Many people prefer the clean look of a circumcised penis or wish that they were circumcised at birth.

We take every step that the result you receive is aesthetically optimal: we take pride that our procedures result with a minimally visible surgical scar and a smooth transition between skin color at the incision site.

Hygienic

The area between the foreskin and the head, especially when the foreskin is unable to retract, is a warm damp environment that is a perfect breeding ground for the spread of bacteria, especially with regular sexual contact.

Patients can enhance cleanliness, eliminate the threat of balanitis & posthitis (inflammation of the head and foreskin, respectively), and significantly reduce the spread of STDs to themselves and their partner.

Religious

Genesis 17:10-14: This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.

Circumcision began as a symbol for faith in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and we fully support patients undergoing this procedure to fulfill the covenant.

Sexual

Surveys say that many women prefer circumcised vs. uncircumcised: in an international study done by CMAJ, over 90% of women preferred the look and feel of a circumcised penis, while 85% of women said that they were "“more pleasant to touch”.

Studies have also shown that circumcision can be an effective treatment for premature ejaculation.

Circumcision Procedures & Info

  • After an no-risk phone Q&A with a HC team member, the next step would be to meet with Dr. Kim (either in-person or virtual) to discuss medical history, differences between the two types of circumcisions, and your desired result.

Depending on the patient and their schedule, it is possible to schedule both the consultation and the procedure on the same day, which is incredibly helpful for patients coming from out-of-town.

  • In a traditional circumcision, the foreskin is simply removed. In an aesthetic circumcision, the foreskin is precisely repositioned and reduced to meet the patient’s requirements.

The main benefit of an aesthetic circumcision is the customizability of the look that you want to receive: after thousands of procedures and patients, Dr. Kim has finely tuned the art of delivering the desired result discussed during your consultation.

  • The Ring-Based circumcision uses an innovative ring-based technique to create a consistent and comfortable circumcision each time. It follows a simple 3 step process:

    1. The first step is mark the foreskin and to use a local anesthetic and antiseptic for the patients safety and comfort.

    2. After the ring is applied, the foreskin will be pulled back at the degree for maximum cosmetic benefit, and then tied once again around the ring.

    3. The snip: a quick and efficient cut will be made to remove the foreskin in strategic places to remove the foreskin and to ensure optimized healing.

To ensure smooth healing, the ring will remain in place for 7-10 days after the procedure.

  • A frenulectomy is the removal of the frenulum, the piece of skin that connects the head to the lower shaft of the penis.

Many men choose to have the frenulum removed during their circumcisions for aesthetic reasons. This is not a problem for us, and a frenulectomy can be done during the procedure for a small additional fee.

  • During an aesthetic circumcision consultation, male patients get to decide what their penis looks like without the foreskin.

Dr. Kim is able to customize the amount of foreskin removed (high - low) and the resulting tightness of the shaft (loose - tight). We recommend booking a no-risk Q&A with one of our team members to discuss the look that you want.

FAQs

What happens during the circumcision procedure?

We do two styles of circumcisions here at Houston Circumcision - the traditional circumcision and also using the Shang Ring technique.

Please look above to see more details about how the aesthetic circumcision and Ring-Based technique is performed.

What the difference between the two techniques?

Ring-Based - easy, fast, bloodless. Less customized. Potential for scar around incision area based on patient aftercare. Requires two visits.

Aesthetic - Customizable, aesthetic, only requires one visit.

Are there any medical conditions that disqualify me for the procedure?

Potentially. Patients that are diabetic or pre-diabetic have a risk of increased bleeding following the procedure, so we highly recommend contacting us with a copy of your HBA1C blood test results to see if its medically safe.

Will I feel pain during the procedure?

Virtually all of our patients have reported very little pain during the procedure itself - we use local anesthesia.

We do not do general anesthesia - we can offer a oral sedative medication for those feeling anxious prior to the procedure.

After the procedure, there will be mild to moderate pain once the anesthesia wears off - we will provide all the medication once the patient is ready to leave the clinic.

Is there an age limit?

No, there is no age limit: as you probably know, there are many that get circumcised at birth.

However, we do not do infant circumcisions at HC: we only accept patients that are above 8 years of age that are able to tolerate the procedure.

All patients under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a guardian.

How long is the recovery time? What does it look like?

Since we use local anesthesia, you will be able to walk and / or drive right after the procedure. We will provide the necessary medication on your trip home.

Depending on the patient’s aftercare, patients should expect an aesthetic and minimally visible line where the foreskin used to be. To ensure optimal healing, we recommend withholding from sexual activities for four weeks.

Can you get circumcised at any age?

Absolutely - although we do have a minimum of 8 years on the low end. We do have patients in their senior years that want to get this procedure done: as long as they’re healthy enough for the procedure, there is no conflict.

How long does the procedure take?

After consulting with you for your desired aesthetic results, Dr. Kim will give his medical opinion on which procedure would be best fit for you.

Based on the type of procedure, Dr. Kim takes around 30-60 mins per procedure.

Will it affect the size of my penis? Will it affect the sensitivity?

No for both. Since we are removing just the foreskin, there will be no change in the size of the penis, erect or flaccid. To that note, virtually none of Dr. Kim’s patients have reported a change in sensitivity since most of the peripheral nerves grow back over time.

Do you do frenulectomies?

Yes - A frenulectomy is the removal of the frenulum, the ridge of skin that connects under the head of the penis to the shaft that can cause tightness or painful discomfort. Many patients choose to have this procedure done alongside the circumcision for medical or aesthetic reasons for an additional fee.

Do you do circumcision revisions?

Yes, we have often changed the look of a previous circumcision that the patient is unhappy with: scars, skin tags, or excessive skin are the most common reasons why patients choose to get a revision.

However, a revision does not fall under the typical circumcision fee schedule; a consultation with Dr. Kim is required so that he can take a look and determine the plan.

Can I travel to Houston to get the procedure?

Yes, a great number of our patients come from outside of Texas and travel to see Dr. Kim. The good news is that patients can drive or fly back home the same day (no bad news here). We recommend giving our team a call for ideal travel arrangement recommendations.

Who will be in the room during the procedure?

Dr. Kim and his medical assistant will be in the surgery room during the procedure
